こんにちは！　夏休みに入ったサリー大学。一部、看護学部等ではまだこれからテストがあるという話も耳にしましたが、サリー大学のほとんどの学生は、夏休みに入っているはずです。そして、次の学年が始まるのが9月の終わり。3か月以上と各段に長い夏休みは、旅行をしたり、バイトをしたり、2年生を終わったばかりの人だとインターンをしたり、みなそれぞれの過ごしかたをするようです。そんな私もいまは日本に帰っていて、のんびりと荷物の整理をしながら、アルバイトを探しているところ……時間を有意義に使おうと言っているうちに9月になっていたなんてことのないように頑張らねばですね。

 

と、いま私は日本にいますが、このブログには日本人以外の訪問者さんもいらっしゃるということなので、（いるといいな。）夏休みのあいだにちょこちょこ日本のことも書いていくかもしれません。しかしサリー大学のことを具体的に書けたらなと前回、前々回に書いた手前、今日は、サリー大学の寮のことを書いてみようと思います。

 

Hello everyone! Summer break has come to Surrey, and I am now in Japan, until the end of September, when the next term starts at. (Such a long break!) So I might write about the things in Japan for sometime, but today I will write about student accommodation.

 

 

 

サリー大学の大学寮には、Band AからFまで6つの料金ランクがあります。Aがいちばん安く、Fが高い。料金は2倍以上も変わってきて、出費にも大きくかかわってきます。私はそのうちの、Band Aのシングルの部屋に住んでいました。（Band Aにはシェアするタイプとそうでないタイプがあります。それはたしか、寮の希望で選ぶことができたはずです。）Band Aって安いとどうなの？　と思われるかもしれませんが、個人的には住みよい場所だと思っています。

①設備、②キャンパスからの距離、③寮の雰囲気の三点について、Band Aの寮を中心にまとめていこうと思います。

 

Surrey has a wide range of student accommodation option from Band A to Band F; A is the cheapest and F is the highest. I lived in Band A Single (there is Band A Shared as well, and I remember I could choose the preference of shared or single) for two years, this year and last year when doing foundation course. And actually, Band A Single is comfortable to live in I think, though I chose it because of the price.

I will write Surrey accommodation (mainly Band A single) in terms of facility, distance from the campus, and atmosphere.

 

 

◆１：設備 Facility◆

 

上の写真が、Band Aのシングルの寮になります。（最初の写真もそうです。）真ん中のドアを入るとそこからさらに左右にわかれていて、イギリスによくある、セミ・デタッチドハウスのようになっています。左右でフラットの番号も違っていて、それぞれのフラットがひとつの家のような感じ。個室7つと、キッチンと、シャワールームとトイレを7人でシェア。トイレとシャワーは正確には、トイレと、シャワールームと、トイレ＆シャワールーム、といった具合にふたつずつあります。フラットのドアを開けると玄関ではなくいきなりキッチンになったりしていて、家としてはなんとなく不思議、そこはやはり寮だなという感じはあるかもしれません。玄関がわりになっているのが、外からひとつドアを入ったところ、左右に分かれる前の空間です。ついでに、ヘーゼル・ファームの寮（Band AシングルとBand Bの一部）ではこの玄関スペースに郵便物が届きます。ほかの寮では、各寮のレセプションに郵便は届くことになっています。

 

The photo above is Band A Single house. It’s like a semi-detached house. There are seven rooms, a kitchen, a toilet, a shower room, and a toilet & shower room, shared by 7 students. When opened the first door in the middle (in the photo), there is an entrance space for two flats; all the letters are directly delivered to the flats, to this place. (This is different from other accommodations, where students need to go to the reception to get letters; the accommodation in Hazel Farm (Band A Single and some Band B) is different.) And when opening the door to the flat, you will see the kitchen area, which I was surprised at first.

 

 

Band Aの部屋。部屋の大きさは7つの部屋それぞれですが、備品は同じです。Bandが上になると他に収納引き出しがあったりもするようです。

This is a Band A Single room. The size of the room is different within the seven rooms, but the furniture is same: a bed, a chair, a desk, a cupboard, a shelf, a lamp, a heater, and a bin.

 

 

 

また、Band B以上だと部屋に洗面台が、Band D以上だと部屋にトイレ・シャワールームが付きます。

If the room is above Band B, there will be washbasin in a room, and a room above Band D will have toilet and shower room.

 

 

それから、こちらがキッチン。下の写真はちょうど、フラットメイトのひとりが誕生日のときでなにやら散らかっていますが、空間としてはこんな感じです。料理をする時間がかちあってしまうと、少し狭いかもしれません。ほかのBandだと、これより広いキッチンが多いです。（同じBandのなかでも場所によって違ったり、まちまちなのですが、Band Aシングルは、みんなこの広さ。）ついでに写真奥に見える扉が、玄関スペースへの扉です。

 

The photo below is the kitchen in Band A Single. It’s messy for a birthday surprise for one of the flatmates, but the image of the kitchen is like this.

 

 

シャワーとトイレの写真は手持ちにありませんでした……が、Band Aシングルのシャワーとトイレは綺麗です。わけがあって私は、この2年でBand Aシングルのフラット4つを転々としたのですが、どこのフラットでも度を越して汚いことはなかったと思います。週に一度（頻度はBandによって違いますが）、清掃のひとが来て共通スペースは掃除してもらえます。トイレ・シャワーをシェアしているBand Aではそういったところの清掃もしてもらえるので、綺麗に保たれるような感じです。

Unfortunately, I don’t have any photo of the toilet nor the shower room, but I think the toilet and the shower room are generally clean. Actually I moved in three times and lived in four flats for some reason in this two years, but the toilet and the bathroom weren’t too messy in any of the flats. A flat will be cleaned once a week (the frequency is different from the Bands), and the toilet and shower room will also be cleaned in Band A flat, as the areas are shared.

 

ただ、キッチンは、一週間のうちでも散らかりやすいかもしれません。（寮によっては徹底して綺麗だったり、逆にすごく散らかったり、フラットのメンバーの雰囲気や料理の頻度に依るかもしれません。）

However, the kitchen might be easy to get messy, depending on the atmosphere of the flat.

 

 

◆２：キャンパスからの距離 Distance from the Campus◆

 

サリー大学の寮はじつは、三か所にわかれてあります。

• キャンパス寮
• マナー・パーク寮…キャンパスからバス10分、徒歩20～30分
• ヘーゼル・ファーム寮…キャンパスからバス20～30分、徒歩45分

 

Surrey accommodations are mainly located in three areas.

• Campus
• Manor Park: 10 minutes by bus, 20-30 minutes by walk
• Hazel Farm: 20-30 minutes by bus, 45 minutes by walk

 

Band Aシングルはこのなかの、ヘーゼル・ファーム寮。キャンパスからは少し離れています。そのせいか、友達の間でも、「ヘーゼル・ファームに住んでる」と言うと、「遠いね……」とじゃっかん同情されます……。しかし慣れてしまえば、登下校も高校のときの通学のような感じで、そこまで不便な感じもしない気がします。遠いぶん安いですし……。

ヘーゼル・ファームに住んでいるひとは年間パスがもらえます（寮の費用のなかに含まれています）。人によっては徒歩や自転車で登下校している人もいます。

 

Band A Singe is in Hazel Farm, which is a kind of far from the campus. But I think it’s not too bad when thinking of the travel distance in high school. (In Japan, going to school by train is common.) The students living in Hazel Farm will receive bus pass to use the bus. (This is included in the accommodation price.) Some people go to campus by walk or by bicycle.

The accommodation in Hazel Farm is Band A Single and some Band B. I heard Band A Shared is on the campus.

そんなヘーゼル・ファームに住んでいるのはBand Aシングルと一部のBand B。大多数はマナー・パークとキャンパス寮に住んでいます。Band Aのシェアルームのほうもキャンパス寮にあるそうです。

 

 

◆３：寮の雰囲気◆

寮の雰囲気はやっぱり、寮によっていろいろです。

私はBand Aシングルのなかで、この2年間、4つの寮を転々として過ごしましたが、最初の寮は男女混合で、イギリス人4人、スペイン人1人、ナイジェリア人1人と、結構ヨーロッパ系な感じで、よくキッチンでお酒を飲んでいました。上の、誕生日のキッチンの写真もそのときのものです。わいわい仲良くする感じの寮でした。

The atmosphere of the accommodation is different from flat to flat. I lived in four flats within this two years, and in the first flat, there were 4 British, 1 Spanish, and 1 Nigerian. With more than half of the British flatmates, the atmosphere of the flat was open; they liked to have fun and have drink. I was (am) really shy, but they often talked to me and asked me to go to Rubix. It was really nice. The photo of the kitchen above is from this flat.

 

次に移った先が、じつは玄関を挟んでその隣のフラット。そこは、詳しくは覚えていないのですがインド人、日本人（日本人がいました！）、それからアフリカの人という感じで、そこにひとりだけいたドイツ人の子が、「アジア・アフリカな雰囲気の寮が合わなくて……」ということで交換することとなりました。そこも男女混合でしたが、最初の寮とは対照に、静かなフラットでした。あまりお互い干渉しない空気。それでもキッチンで会えば「なにを作ってるの」とか「今日なにがあった？」とかと話をするので、過干渉すぎずちょうどよかったかなと思います。

The next flat was quiet with Asian and African students. Actually, this flat was just next to my first flat, sharing the same entrance. I swapped rooms with a German girl who preferred the European atmosphere, and for me, there was another Japanese in the new flat.

The new flat was very quiet. But when I saw flatmates in kitchen, we talked something like “what are you cooking? Oh cool it’s the traditional food from your country!” The atmosphere was different from the first one, but I liked this as well.

 

それから、夏休み、寮の期間が切れるのがテスト後6月半ばだったりするのですが、去年の夏休み、私は7月半ばまでイギリスに滞在していて、その寮の延長のために、ヘーゼル・ファーム内の別のフラットに移りました。（移らないとフラットに私ひとりきりだったようで、寮を管理する側としても、清掃とかの関係で、生徒は1か所にまとめておきたいものなのかもしれません。）今度は女子寮。マスター（大学院生）の集まる寮に、空きがでたので私が移されたという感じでした。（マスターのコースは9月まであります。）

今度の寮はアットホームな空気で、フラットのグループチャット（WhatsApp）もありました。ほかの友達の話を聞いたりするところでは、フラットのグループチャットは、フラットによってあったりなかったり。なんとなく女子寮に多いような印象です。新しいその女子寮は、ギリシャ人1人、インド人1人、中国人2人、ナイジェリア人2人でした。私はひと月ほどしかそこにはいませんでしたが、中国人の子とバースに日帰り旅をしたり、インド人の子とワイト島＆ブライトンに2泊3日したり、親しみやすい雰囲気でした。ついでにそのときのフラットのグループチャットは、マスターのコースが終わってみんな散り散りになってしまったいまでも、「ロンドンで事件あったけど大丈夫だったー？」等、たまにメッセージが入っています。仲の良い寮でした。

During summer between the foundation year and the first year, I stayed in the UK until the end of July. So I extended the stay of the accommodation, and I moved to the new flat during the term. (I guess the university wanted to allocate students together rather than making a flat with only one student.) The new flat was female-only and was very friendly. They were master students (whose course lasts until September; hence staying during Summer) and actually they were living in the same flat since the start of the year. They got one vacated room and I was newly allocated to there.

So I was a stranger in the flat, but the new flatmates were really warm. There were 1 Greek, 1 Indian, 2 Chinese, and 2 Nigerian. Although I stayed only one month, I visited Bath with a Chinese flatmate, and travelled to Isle of Wight and Brighton with an Indian flatmate. The flat has a WhatsApp group chat, and the chat is still active sometimes, even though everyone has already done the course and has left Surrey. By the way, whether to have group chat or not is depending on the flat. In my image, girl-only flat tend to have group chat though.

 

それから最後、今年に住んだのが、これまた男女混合寮。香港人1人、イギリス人2人、カナダ人1人、スリランカ人1人、マレーシア人1人と、ここも国際色豊かでした。（ほかのBandの友達の話を聞いても、どこも国際色はゆたかです。最初の寮のイギリス人4人みたいなところは珍しいかもしれません）。この寮も雰囲気としては2番目の寮のような感じ、過干渉過ぎずお互いおおらかで気にしないような空気でした。そういう寮だとキッチンは汚れやすかったりするのですが、気を張らないのでストレスのない1年だったとも言えます。

Lastly, this year, I lived with 2 British, 1 Canadian, 1 Sri Lankan, 1 Malay, and 1 Hong Kong girl. Yes the nationality of the flat often varies a lot. The atmosphere of this flat was similar to the second one. They didn’t care too much about other things, and were tolerant. Because of this, the kitchen often got messy, but there was no pressure of thinking others too much, which I felt comfortable.
