Hi everyone!
It’s a very exciting time at Surrey University with the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the University in full swing. The University kicked off the 50th Anniversary Celebrations with a 1960s themed event on Wednesday which included a magnificent firework display at the end. The event was held in a marquee in Pats Field from 5 to 8pm. I went along with my housemates as we wanted to be a part of the celebrations. There was live music as well as a medley of songs from 1966 to 2016 to commemorate the 50 years which was performed by the GSA students (Guildford School of Arts). After, Imagine the Beatles, a Beatles Tribute band took the centre stage.
Besides performances, there were food stalls serving a selection of delicious meals. I opted for the chicken Paella and a cider. I was super excited as you can tell from the picture below as there was a photo booth on site; complete with fun accessories to wear and hold for the pictures. There were also boards where students could put sticky notes regarding their experiences and memories at Surrey. We didn’t manage to get pictures with the 50th Balloon decorations as the queue was just too long and we were eager to secure a good spot to view the fireworks
At around 7.10pm, we were ushered outside beside the marquee for the vice chancellor’s speech which was followed by the countdown to the fireworks. I absolutely love fireworks and am pleased to say that Surrey University did not disappoint. At precisely 7.25pm, the display began and it was mesmerising to watch the sky being lit up. This lasted for roughly 20 minutes before ending with the 50 logo being lit
The celebrations continue with a Celebratory Procession taking place tomorrow in Guildford Town Centre. Being a Student Ambassador, I have the opportunity to get involved and thus will be on scene tomorrow which is sure to be an exciting event! Hopefully I’ll get some photos from the event and post it up at a later time. But for now, check out a photo from the Celebratory Procession during the 35th Anniversary way back from 2002! It definitely feels very special to be at Surrey University during this time and I’m so proud to be a Surrey student 😀

On a side note, the Malaysian Society is having their Meet and Greet tonight which is sure to be a great event! For those who are new to University, come along to meet other Malaysians and for those oldies like me, I’m just super excited to catch up with friends and have some good old Malaysian food :p
Till next time; Selamat tinggal! x
