Peter Hydon’s paper, co-authored with his former PhD student Tim Grant, on “Characteristics of conservation laws for difference equations” has been accepted for publication in the journal Foundations of Computational Mathematics. The paper sets out the difference analogues of some well-known results on conservation laws, including a proof that the converse of Noether’s Theorem holds for all explicit difference equations. It also provides a method for checking the independence of conservation laws — a problem that is fairly easy for differential equations, but highly nontrivial for difference equations.
