A summer bursary has been awarded to Bin Cheng by the London Mathematical Society to support an undergraduate summer project of Timothy Burchell. The title of the project is “The rotating shallow water equations evolving on a sphere“. This system is widely used as a testing example for numerical algorithms as well as theoretical studies in the geophysical literature. The project will investigate how the system can be reduced when the Froude number and/or the Rossby number is very small, and how accurate the reduced systems are.
