On Tuesday 26th January, Philip Aston attended the event “Mathematical Sciences: Driving the UK Economy” at the House of Commons which was organised by the Council for the Mathematical Sciences (CMS). The event was opened by Stephen Metcalfe MP and the speakers were Sir Andrew Dilnot, Dr Mike Lynch, Prof Dame Celia Hoyles, Howard Covington and Prof Simon Tavaré who each gave their personal perspective on the strengths of the UK mathematics community and the challenges that it faces. After the speeches, Prof Sir Adrian Smith FRS advertised the forthcoming book UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics, published by Springer, which is edited by Philip Aston together with Tony Mulholland and Katy Tant from the University of Strathclyde, who also attended. In the reception that followed, there was much interest shown in this book which contains 37 case studies that each tell the story of a successful collaboration between mathematicians and industry partners. The book will be published by Springer in mid-February.
