The paper “From liquid crystal models to the guiding-center theory of magnetized plasmas“, authored by Cesare Tronci, has been accepted for publication in the Annals of Physics.  Upon combining Northrop’s picture of charged particle motion with modern liquid crystal theories, the paper provides a new description of guiding center dynamics, to lowest order.  A final form preprint can be found on the arXiv here.
