The paper “Optimal mixing enhancement” co-authored by Gary Froyland (University of New South Wales) and Naratip Santitissadeekorn has recently appeared in the SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics.  A link to the published paper is here. The paper introduces a general-purpose method for optimizing the mixing rate of advective fluid flows.
