The paper “How fake news can turn against its spreader“, co-authored by Dorje Brody and Tomooki Yuasa (Tokyo Metropolitan University), was published last week (5 September) in PLOS One. It is open acccess (link here). The paper argues that when there are two information sources, one genuine and one containing disinformation, the effect of disinformation can be reversed from its original intent, when the signal-to-noise ratio of the genuine is sufficiently large, and the two information sources are positively correlated. It is shown that this mechanism, when the conditions arise, provides an effective way of countering the impacts of disinformation.
