The book “More UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics“, edited by Philip Aston, has been published by Springer (web page here). This is the second volume of a series based on mathematics REF impact case studies. The book contains 36 articles, each describing one of the REF2021 impact case studies that has been rewritten to tell the story of a successful collaboration between a mathematician and an end user in industry or government. All the articles describe the problem being considered, the mathematical solution, and the impact that the work has had.
Mathematics research contributes to the solution of problems in a multitude of disciplines with application to many facets of everyday life and society, but often goes unnoticed and unrecognised. This book shines a light on some of the areas where mathematics and mathematicians are making fundamental contributions. The articles are wide ranging and include work done on: (a) improving weather forecasts, (b) improving batteries for electric vehicles, (c) real-time modelling during the COVID-19 pandemic, (d) drug safety testing, (e) digital marketing and social media networks, (e) a digital twin of a bank, and (f) a collaboration between a pure mathematician and a composer.
