Hi, my name is Tomiwa and I am currently on a Placement Year at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars (RRMC). My department is called Total Vehicle Quality and my main job role is making sure that the cars are made to the standard that the customer would expect.
RRMC is a luxury automobile manufacturer based in Goodwood, West Sussex. RRMC is renowned for its iconic brand, exquisite craftmanship and attention to details. Currently, there are four models of vehicles crafted here; these are: the Cullinan, the Spectre, the Phantom, and the Ghost.
How I found my placement
The way I found the opportunity was through the career fairs that the Uni organised. In February 2023, Surrey hosted an engineering career’s fair and RRMC was attending. They had a QR code, which directly led you to the BMW Group recruitment site with the available positions and I was encouraged to apply. Surrey has two big career’s fair every year. One in October and another in February, my advice is to go and see what’s on offer because you might just land yourself a great opportunity like me.
The onboarding process
When I first started here, it was a big change of pace. New location, I barely knew anyone, and it was the first time I had ever done a full time (40hrs a week) job. Despite this, RRMC made it quite easy to get to know people. They set up group chats for interns to join, arranged social events, and inductions to get used to the company itself. These things helped me to find a good bunch of people to vibe with.
Life on placement
I’ve just reached my 9th month, and all I can say is that I’m loving it here. Nothing is better than being given work which makes a difference to the company. It isn’t a job role focussed around pushing paper and populating excel sheets. The things I do get me directly involved with the cars and their overall quality before being distributed to the clients.
I couldn’t have asked for a much better placement year so far and I know it is only going to get better. I have more interesting projects lined up and I can’t wait to get them started. Overall, I recommend doing a placement year because of the invaluable lessons and experiences you can gain while being on one.
