Hey guys! As mentioned in my previous blogs, I will be reccomending some day trips from Guildford if you’re looking to take a break from your studies and explore more of what the UK has to offer. Plus point- Guildford’s central location makes it an ideal base for some fantastic day trips, so be sure to seize the opportunity to explore new places! Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply in need of a change of scenery, there’s something for everyone. Here are some top day trip ideas that are just a short journey away from Guildford.
1. London
- What to Do: Just a 40mins ride away by train, London needs no introduction. From iconic landmarks like the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, and the London Eye to world-class museums like the British Museum and the Natural History Museum, there’s always something to see and do in the capital. Stroll along the Thames, catch a West End show, or indulge in some shopping on Oxford Street. However, while exploring London, it’s always wise to be more cautious with your belongings as some of my friends have unfortunately experienced pickpocketing incidents there.
2. Windsor
- What to Do: Visit the stunning Windsor Castle, one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. The castle’s State Apartments, St. George’s Chapel, and the beautiful grounds are a must-see. After the castle, you can take a nice walk along the Thames or explore the quaint shops and cafes in the town.

3. Brighton
- What to Do: Brighton is a vibrant seaside city known for its eclectic vibe and bohemian atmosphere. Visit the iconic Brighton Pier, explore the narrow alleyways of The Lanes, and check out the Royal Pavilion, an exotic palace with Indian and Chinese influences. The beach here is unique, with pebbles rather than sand—quite different from the sandy shores of Singapore! Despite the difference, the lively atmosphere and variety of attractions make it a great day out.
4. Oxford
- What to Do: Home to the world-famous University of Oxford, this city is steeped in history and academic prestige. I was in awe just wandering through the historic university colleges. Additionally, you can also visit the Ashmolean Museum, and take a peaceful punt down the River Cherwell.
5. Box Hill
- What to Do: If you’re into hiking and stunning views, Box Hill is a must-visit. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and is part of the famous North Downs Way. It’s a great spot for a picnic or a scenic walk.
6. Portsmouth
- What to Do: Portsmouth is a historic naval city with plenty to see and do. You can visit the historic dockyard, home to the HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum. Additionally, you can take a ride up the Spinnaker Tower for stunning views of the coast or enjoy some fresh seafood at one of the waterfront restaurants. Lastly, be sure not to miss Gunwharf Quays, an outlet shopping center with a variety of stores, restaurants, and bars, perfect for some retail therapy. They do have good deals sometimes so it’s a good excuse to pop down and give yourself a little treat at times! After all, who dosen’t love a good deal? 😉
7. Stonehenge
- What to Do: One of the most famous prehistoric monuments in the world, Stonehenge is one of the most popular places to visit. The mysterious stone circle has fascinated people for centuries, and the visitor center offers insightful exhibits about its history and significance. It’s a bit further afield, but the trip is worth it for the chance to see such an iconic site.
These are just a few of the many fantastic day trips you can take from Guildford. Each destination offers its own unique charm and experiences, providing a perfect escape from the rigors of university life. I hope you all have fun exploring and do let me know in the comments if you happen to visit any! 🙂
