HACKATHON17 – Create a product, service or campaign to tackle the Sustainable Development Goals in 3 days!

Back for 2022 on 13th – 15th June ON CAMPUS including BBQ!

Students across all levels of study from Foundation Year to PhD can get involved in this SDG hack where interdisciplinary teams will be created to tackle some real-world problems!

Collaborate with students from different walks of life and bring your skills, interests and personal strengths to the team – whilst your team mates bring theirs! Together we can tackle big problems, understand the world around us better and find solutions that can have a real impact for the rest of your time at University and beyond. This event is not all about the technical – solutions you design may be products, services or campaigns, but there may be a tech element too!

No experience is necessary to take part – all academic disciplines are desirable, all personal interests are welcomed and all life experiences are valuable! Come as you are. Represent. Diversity is vital to the team!

In 2022 Hackathon17 tackles SDGS 2 & 3 – Zero Hunger and Good Health and Wellbeing so you will be faced with problem statements around these issues. Your team can choose to tackle an intrapreneurial consultancy-style challenge or create an entrepreneurial start-up to tackle an issue. The choice is yours!

The event will take place on campus, with MySurrey Spark as the base for the hands-on activities. Break out spaces outside will give us the fresh air and space to be creative and begin to understand the problems we are facing and the people who make up our teams. A BBQ lunch by the lake will offer time to get to know each other more and to appreciate the access to good food we are lucky enough to have.

The hackathon schedule is:

  • Monday 13th June – Day One (on campus) 10 – 4pm: team building and ideation day
  • Tuesday 14th June – Days Two (on campus) 10 – 4pm: Business, marketing & pitching Masterclasses
  • Wednesday 15th June – Day Three (on campus) 10 – 4pm: Pitch practice and live pitch competition

In between the fixed sessions you will meet with your team mates and have the opportunity to have pitch practice with MBA students’ feedback in your teams. MySurrey Spark will be filled with refreshments, resources, cushions and blankets, to you can make yourselves comfortable as you work hard on solving your problems.
