Your summer break between potentially finishing college/sixth form and moving to university is a great time to prepare and relax before starting your degree. Continue reading to discover some tips for your summer holiday before university…
Learn how to cook some simple meals
Cooking is an important skill at university, unfortunately students cannot live off takeaways and ready meals. If you have little experience in the kitchen, ask your family and friends at home to teach you how to make some simple meals. When you start university, your skills will develop and you will be able to easily expand on the dishes that you like to make. Living with other students in halls gives you the opportunity to share ideas and cook meals together.
Consider part-time work
Some students like to have a part-time job over the summer to save some money before university. This can also help cover some of the costs of buying things for university (e.g. cooking utensils, electronics, stationery).
Make the most of your hometown
If you’re moving away from your hometown, make the most of it before going to university.
Spend time with family and friends
For lots of students, moving to university is the first time that they’ve been away from their family and friends back home. Take your summer holiday before moving to university as an opportunity to spend time with family and friends.
Volunteering
Some students like to gain additional experience prior to university to help build their CV for the future, volunteering is a great way to do this. There are lots of summer camps and events that take place over the summer that you can get involved in.
Make a student budget
Budgeting is key for students to make sure they don’t run out of money and can cover all their necessary bills. Starting this budgeting in the summer before university can be a good way to become familiar with the concept and will give you one less ‘new thing’ to think about in September.
Start packing!
Start packing the essentials like bedding, clothing and kitchen equipment ready for September! Try to only pack the essentials and items you will actually use, rather than items ‘just in case’. Guildford Town Centre is only a ~20 minute walk from Stag Hill campus so you can easily buy anything you need.
Relax!
Take some time to relax and rest before moving to university. You could restart an old hobby or take up something new.
Think about what you may need to buy for university
As previously mentioned, you may need to buy things for university. Make a list of what you need to buy and do your research… try to find the cheapest place online before buying it.
