Clearing: Finding my place at Surrey

When I first discovered what clearing was, I associated it with disorder and uncertainty. My initial thought the night before results day was that the experience was going to be overwhelming, and the clearing process would be extremely stressful. However, my experience applying to the University of Surrey turned out to be much easier and far less chaotic than I had imagined.

Preparing before results day

Prior to results day, I made sure I was as prepared as possible. I researched various universities, including Surrey beforehand, looked carefully into the course structure for psychology, as I had wished to study, and made sure it was somewhere I could genuinely see myself studying and enjoying.

I remember initially feeling lost and isolated when I decided to go through clearing; however, talking with friends, family and tutors certainly helped me voice my thoughts and decide what was best for me. I also saved the clearing phone number in my phone the night before so I would not be searching for it on the day. Looking back, this preparation really helped me feel more organised when results day arrived.

Making the call

As soon as I collected my results, I called Surrey straight away (I was actually the first person to call!) and the process was very straightforward. The person on the phone was incredibly friendly and asked for my grades, what course I wished to study and my personal details. Rather than feeling stressed, the conversation felt reassuring and supportive.

What happened after Clearing

Not long after my call, my UCAS updated, and I received an email to create my Surrey account and complete the next steps for admin. The process ran smoothly, including sorting out my campus card and discussing accommodation options.

Although I was offered the opportunity to join the accommodation waiting list, I ultimately decided to commute instead, which has worked very well for me. I also updated my student finance details to the University of Surrey soon after to ensure everything was correct.

Settling into university life

Now having settled into the University of Surrey, I can say I’m so glad I went through clearing. The campus is walkable and welcoming, and there are a diverse range of societies and activities that make it easy to connect with people and feel part of the community.

One of the things I have enjoyed most is studying psychology here. I have found the content engaging and, most importantly, interesting, which has further fuelled my passion for psychology. In addition, the lecturers have been very supportive and approachable, making the transition into university life much easier.

My top tips

My overall top tips for clearing would be:

  • Research universities and course structures beforehand.
  • Save clearing phone numbers the night before results day.
  • Call early to help the process run smoothly.
  • Talk to friends, family and teachers if you’re feeling unsure.
  • Treat yourself on results day – I certainly did with numerous cups of bubble tea!

Most importantly, be confident and trust yourself. Be proud of how far you have come, regardless of your results.
