My name is Adam and I’m a second year Criminology with Forensic Investigation studying at the University of Surrey, who went through the clearing process due to not getting the A levels I aimed to achieve.

My Personal Clearing Experience
Clearing was a time when I felt uncertain about my future. On results day after receiving two rejections from both my firm and insurance choices, I felt devastated. I went to collect my results and then access the clearing course selection to start the clearing process. My mum and I worked as a team whilst navigating clearing, we wrote down the vital information and passed the phone back and forth taking it in turns talking to those on the clearing phone lines. This teamwork reduced my fears whilst undergoing this process. The sixth form teachers were very supportive during my time in the clearing process.
I got an offer from the University of Surrey, and I am so glad that I got in. I felt a wave of relief knowing that my future path although uncertain temporarily, recorrected itself and led me to where I am today. The people who answer the phones during the clearing process are the lifeline and calming presence that students like me may need when applying for clearing, this is because clearing can be a stressful experience.
My Time at Surrey
Since I got into Surrey I have enjoyed every moment of it. I have made friends from my degree, joined the Sociology Society, and collaborated with the staff and students. The environment at Surrey has been one that has pushed me out of my comfort zone allowing me to get to know different people, growing my social skills and pushing me further into becoming the person I want to be.
The course I chose offers interdisciplinary modules which allow me to experience parts of other courses and learn about new concepts and content. The teaching staff at the University have been supportive and have provided me with opportunities to further my learning and understanding around the topics of Criminology and forensic investigation. I have never regretted the decision I made to accept an offer from the University of Surrey.
The ornate beauty of the Surrey campus is reflected by the lake which provides an oasis to relax and enjoy the warmth of a summer’s day. The buildings and greenery around the campus allow for events to be run which instil a sense of community in the students who attend them. The facilities on campus like the HIVE and the library allow students to ask questions and find further support about any issues they are having.
Tips for Clearing
I think my best top tip for any student who may go through clearing is to have a support system of people with you or someone there to support you on the day. The support system can ground you in a time of uncertainty. Another tip I can suggest is for students to look at related courses to the ones they hope to study and to also look at the universities that correspond to those subjects. This process can help alleviate the pressure that comes from results day when you have to go through clearing.
