My First Blog (Omer Sarigul)

Hey! I am Omer, a first year PhD student in Economics. After completing my MRes at Surrey, I decided to stay here as it is a university offering more than what l expected. Before joining Surrey, I was a Master student in Budapest and I completed my Bachelors in Istanbul at Marmara University.

To be honest, I did not know about Surrey until 2020, on February the 6^th my British friend Lee Martin, paid a surprise visit in Budapest. Although it was my birthday, I was very busy with my thesis and MRes&PhD applications. Then, my friend suggested me Surrey, I immediately checked the university and the campus, I was surprised as the campus looked so beautiful and university is well-recognised. I then applied and got accepted. At the end of September 2020, I came to London, meeting my friend Lee in London felt amazing, and we were both surprised how things developed. After staying in London for the night, excited to immediately go to the university, we made our way to Guildford.

My first day in Guildford was a very rainy day, yet l was with my friend, Martin, who made it possible for me to be at Surrey. We came from London to Guildford watching the beautiful landscape on the way. Although we were wet and tired, trying to find the Stag Hill reception, we bumped into the lake, we both were amazed. I then settled in the dorm and started to wander around the campus, which is one of the biggest and most beautiful campus. It has been more than 1.5 year and l am still not bored of the campus and there is always a new place to discover as it is immensely big.

As a postgraduate student, all l can say is that l am quite satisfied and advise everyone to consider Surrey in their options. Both the campus and the university have a lot to offer as well as the proximity to London.

Herkese Selam! Ben Ömer Sarıgül, İktisat birinci sınıf doktora öğrencisiyim. Surrey’de Araştırma Master çalışmamı tamamladıktan sonra, burada kalmaya karar verdim üniversite beklentimin çok üstünde fırsatlar sunduğu için. Surrey’e katılmadan önce ise Budapeşte’de Yüksek Lisans, İstanbul’da Marmara Üniversitesi’de Lisans eğitimimi tamamladım.

Doğruyu söylemek gerekirse, 2020 yılına kadar Surrey Üniversitesi’ni bilmiyordum, 6 Şubat’ta İngiliz arkadaşım Budapeşte’de bana sürpriz bir ziyaret gerçekleştirdi. Doğum günüm olmasına rağmen, tezim ve MRes&Doktora başvurularım ile meşguldüm. Sonrasında, arkadaşım bana Surrey’i önerdi, hemen üniversite ve kampüsü kontrol ettim, hem kampüsün güzelliği hem de üniversitenin tanınırlılığı beni şaşırtmıştı. Sonrasında başvurdum ve kabul edildim. 2020 Eylül ayı sonunda, Londra’ya geldim, arkadaşım Lee ile Londra’da buluşmak inanılmaz iyi geldi, ikimiz de olayların nasıl geliştiğine şaşırmıştık. Geceyi Londra’da geçirdikten sonra, hemencecik üniversitede olma heyecanı ile, Guildford’a doğru yolumuzu tuttuk.

Guildford’daki ilk gün çok yağmurlu idi, fakat arkadaşım Lee benimle idi, ki kendisi Surrey’de olmamı mümkün kılan kişi. Yorgun ve ıslak olmamıza rağmen, Stag Hill Resepsiyonunu bulmaya çalışırken, bir anda Göl ile karşılaşmamız ikimizide şaşkına çevirdi. Sonrasında yurda yerleşip kampüsü keşfe başladım, gördüğüm en büyük ve güzel kampüslerden biriydi. Üzerinden 1.5 yıl geçti, hala kampüsten sıkılmadım, hala kampüste keşfetmediğim yerler var, kampüs o kadar büyük ki.

Bir doktora talebesi olarak tek söyleyeceğim herkesin Surrey’i seçenekleri arasında düşünmesiç Hem kampüsün hem de üniversitenin çok fazla imkanı var, tabii Londra’ya olan yakınlığı ise cabası.
