How to Survive Four Seasons in A Day

A beautiful beach day my family and I had in St. Ives, Cornwall 2019

The United Kingdom is a wonderfully strange place when it comes to the weather. You experience Winter, Autumn, Summer and Spring within a matter of a couple of hours. My move to the UK has been a serious test of my wardrobe decisions, so I thought I’d fill you in on a few tricks of the trade.

First of all, never ever let the fact that the sun is shining cloud your judgement in whether you need a jacket/coat or not. NEVER leave your jacket/coat at home. I have been fooled by this trick far too many times. Even in Summer, it’s always handy to have a cardigan, denim jacket or just something light to keep with you in case of a cool breeze.

It also helps if your jacket/coat has a hood for the little drizzles of rain when you accidentally forget your umbrella, however I also advise you try your hardest to never forget your umbrella. I never leave the house without an umbrella, I’ve got one in my handbag, backpack and car. I like to think that if I have it with me it won’t rain, almost like jinxing it in reverse.

Now, in Winter, layering up is the best thing you can do. Indoors are very warm due to central heating, so you don’t want to have the thickest jumper on under your coat and then boil when you are inside. BUT you also don’t want to try brave it by wearing a t-shirt and a coat thinking that that’ll be sufficient for outside. This is why layers are so important. Try wearing a long sleeve t-shirt, a jumper or hoodie and then your coat, maybe even throw in a vest if you get cold easily.

We all know the UK can be a grey and cloudy place, but it really isn’t always like this. I see sun at least once a day most of the time. The thing about the sun in the UK is that when it’s out, you need to take every opportunity to bask in its warmth and glory. If you wake up on a Saturday and the sun is out, GO TO THE BEACH! Or for a walk along the River Thames, have a spontaneous picnic! You can’t always plan things in advance such as going to the beach next weekend because you never really know how the weather is going to turn out, so make sure to take advantage of the sunny days.

Besides, even if you don’t like what the weather outside is currently, give it a few minutes, it’ll change soon.

I hope you have a wonderful week, see you here same time next week!
