Employable me case study 3: Ellie Stevens – Boat club

Ellie Stevens

  • BSc Accounting & Finance (with a placement year at Wells Fargo, working at a Hedge Fund Accountant)
  • MSc Investment Management
  • University of Surrey Boat Club (Rowing) – Women’s Captain 2016/17, President 2017/18
  • Have not graduated yet (but will be working in investment banking)

I stand by the fact that joining USBC is the best thing I have ever done. I have learnt things in the previous couple of years of leading the boat club that I will use for the rest of my life. We always speak about Mark Twain – ‘Don’t let schooling interfere with your education.’

I learned to row as a beginner at Surrey and ended my time with USBC by gaining a national vest, representing England this year.

This year we ended up winning a Gold STARS Award and The Warden of Colours Trophy, and I got the Team Surrey trophy and Full Colours. Sam also got the Sally Edie trophy – teamwork! This was literally just from practicing good leadership and management skills and being extremely passionate about the Club’s success. These are all things which will be on my transcript and that I will talk about in job interviews/on my CV/on LinkedIn, etc.
