BSc Business Management
Lund University
From August 2023 to January 2024, I participated in a study exchange at Lund University, Sweden, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Scandinavia.

Academic Experience
Lund University is renowned for its world-class business school, LUSEM. I enrolled in a mixture of modules, some compulsory, in addition to some elective classes focusing more on economic history. Soon after lectures began, it became evident that the Swedish education system puts more emphasis on critical thinking and the application of knowledge, which I found to be an engaging shift from Surrey’s more theoretical and root-learned approach. Classes were generally quite small, further fostering an interactive environment between lecturers and students.
Further to this, lecturers at Lund were relaxed and approachable and encouraged an open dialogue, often inviting students to share their thoughts and engage in discussions around the subject area. The grading system remained somewhat similar to Surrey, in that grades were formed from a mixture of coursework and exams. However, the exams in Lund could reach 4 or 5 hours in length, a rather gruelling prospect given that they could also start at 8am.
The university’s library system was also a valuable resource, offering extensive access to digital and physical resources along with an abundance of quiet study areas. With that said, the modern learning facilities and interiors contrasted somewhat with the historical campus buildings, though the rich sense of history remained ever present – the attractive central Universitetsbiblioteket being a good example of this.
Cultural and Social Experience

Lund is a student-centred city, home to a vibrant international community. The city is small, making it easy to navigate on foot or by bicycle, the bicycle being the preferred mode of transport for most students (even when it’s snowing… to one Canadian students’ detriment). Indeed, one of the most rewarding aspects of my exchange was the opportunity to meet students from around the world. Moreover, Lund University’s exchange department hosts numerous social events, making it easy for international students to connect.
The sense of community was further strengthened by Lund’s “nations”— student-run organisations that play a central role in student life. The nations offer a variety of activities, from dining and housing to social events like parties and cultural festivals. Joining Lunds Nation allowed me to dive into Swedish traditions, including “fika” (a cherished coffee break with pastries) and events like Cinnamon Bun Day. I also participated in the famed Midsommar festival, which is reimagined in winter as Swedes nostalgically long for the warmer weather.
The exchange also provided opportunities to travel within Sweden and to nearby country’s like Denmark. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring cities like Gothenburg and Copenhagen as well as the more natural beauty found in Söderåsen national park and the forests and lakes surrounding Lund.
Challenges and Growth
While my overall experience was highly positive, there were challenges along the way. The unsympathetic winter weather was one of the biggest adjustments. Short daylight hours and freezing temperatures took time to get used to, but I soon found indoor activities and events from the Nations to help make the most of things. Conveniently, being a member of one nation allowed me access to events across all nations, providing plenty of opportunities to stay socially active.

Language was another adjustment, though most Swedes speak excellent English. Nevertheless, learning some basic Swedish phrases enhanced my integration into the local culture, particularly during everyday interactions like shopping or ordering “fika” at my favourite café, Broder Jakobs. I also visited quirkier places like Alice and Kattens, which offered a unique spot for afternoon tea, as well as the more luxurious Grand Hotel.

My exchange at Lund University was an unforgettable academic and personal journey. It provided me with an opportunity to grow academically, develop new friendships, and experience life in a different cultural context. I gained a broader global perspective, enhanced my academic skills, and developed resilience. I would highly recommend a study exchange at Lund University to anyone seeking a world-class education in a welcoming and vibrant international community.
