Exploring local supermarkets

Happy October! Hope everyone has been settling well. You could never miss out the groceries part in your uni life especially when you are living by yourselves. So, in this blog, I am going to introduce some of the popular supermarket chains in the UK.

Waitrose (£££)

Waitrose & Partners’ is one of the local high-end chain supermarkets. It provides varies ranges of goods of superior quality. Food counters e.g., fish, meat, sushi are also available in the Guildford store. However, the brand is also one of the most expensive supermarkets in the UK.

M&S (£££)

Marks & Spencer is another local luxury brand specialises in selling clothing, beauty, home products and food! There is a floor of food hall in the Guildford store. Their products are well-known to be high in quality. But in terms of prices, it is relatively expensive.

  • Opening hours: Monday-Wednesday, Friday: 8:30am-7pm, Thursday: 8:30am-8pm, Saturday: 8am-7pm, Sunday: 11am-5pm

Tesco (££)

Being the UK’s largest supermarket chain, Tesco is by far the most popular supermarket in England. It consists of its own product brand, aiming to provide quality goods with reduced prices. And the superstore located in Guildford is just a 10minutes walk away from both Manor Park and Stag Hill main campus.

  • Opening hours: Monday-Saturday: 6am-midnight, Sunday: 9:30am-4pm

Sainsbury’s (££)

Sainsbury’s is the oldest supermarket chain in the UK. Similar to Tesco, aiming to offer delicious, great quality goods at fair price. This is therefore another popular grocery destination for student customers.

  • Opening hours: Monday-Saturday: 7am-9pm, Sunday: 11am-5pm

LiDL (£)

Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG is a German international discount retailer chain. It offers a limited range of own branded products at extremely competitive prices. And it is just a 10min away from Stag Hill main campus.

  • Opening hours: Monday-Saturday: 8am-10pm, Sunday: 10am-4pm

ALDI (£)

ALDI is another German discount supermarket chain. Similar to LiDL, offering small selection of goods but with low prices. However, the Guildford store is a 10min drive or 50min walk away from uni.

  • Opening hours: Monday-Saturday: 8am-10pm, Sunday: 11am-5pm

What if I have no time going to town for groceries? No worries, there are also shops available on campus:

Simply Fresh

Simply Fresh is located right below the school library on Stag Hill campus. It is a small shop but offers variety of convenience food and fresh food that are perfect for quick meals.

Thursday market

Thursday market is operated every Thursday 8am-4pm at the Students’ Union (Rubix) on Stag Hill campus. Quality and variety of fresh fruit and veg are available. There is also bakery and hot foods stalls which is perfect for a lunch!
