Hello there! If you happen to be reading this, you’ve stumbled upon my first post (how very exciting!) Since it’s my first time here, I’ll introduce myself, give some insights as to why I chose to study at Surrey and why I am indeed not sorry to be here.
My name is Laris and I am currently in my second year of BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics. I was raised in Hong Kong and did all my studies there, including a prior bachelor’s degree. I’ve even worked for a couple of years, so I’m a bit older than the average straight-out-of-high-school uni student but no one ever suspects this!
The reason why I’m back in uni is this: I want to be a registered dietitian. I’ve always loved biology and chemistry (in hindsight I should have done my first degree in science), I love food and nutrition, learning about the human body, diseases and how food can affect health, and most importantly I want to work in healthcare. I can go on and on about my passion, but this isn’t the focus for today.
I’ve always been drawn to the idea of studying in the UK, so when I was accepted into the Nutrition and Dietetics programme back in 2021 I was really excited! The art, the culture, the language/accent, the history, the architecture, the beauty of the English countryside…the UK has a lot to offer. I’ve been very fortunate to be able to have sporadic adventures during my time here to satisfy my wanderlust.
The reason why I chose Surrey is because it is 1 of 12 universities in the UK that offers a nutrition and dietetics programme accredited by the British Dietetics Association (BDA) and Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). Only by completing a course accredited by BDA and HCPC can you become a registered dietitian, in both the UK and HK. And out of all the universities, Surrey stood out as my top choice. The campus itself is beautiful and in a convenient location, being incredibly close to both Heathrow Airport and London. The town itself, Guildford, is a small town and is incredibly safe. And being located in the south of England, it’s relatively not as cold as up north. The university itself has very high quality teaching, being consistently ranked high for food science subjects, student satisfaction, and employability. Most importantly, the university really takes a “work hard, play hard” approach to work-life balance, as there are many activities to engage with people related to the uni itself and with societies. I have absolutely loved my time in Surrey and continue to enjoy every moment here.
Anyways, those are my reasons for choosing to study at University of Surrey. This is quite an information-heavy topic, and I’ll dive into other topics in future blog posts. If you have any questions about the university, my course, or about studying in the UK in general please do post a comment.
Here’s me signing off. Till next time!
