Cheng-Turner paper to appear in Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society

The paper “A Model for Moist Convection in an Ascending Atmospheric Column” co-authored by Bin Cheng, Mike Cullen (Met Office), Gavin Esler (UCL), John Norbury (Oxford), Matt Turner, Jacques Vanneste (Edinburgh) and Jingrui Cheng (Univ of Wisconsin-Madison) has been accepted for publication in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society. The paper investigates a single column model of moist convection in the atmosphere. The novel aspect of the paper is a new algorithm to model the convective adjustment of the column based upon the conservation of moist potential temperature. The algorithm sorts individual air parcels such that the column adjusts from an unstable to a stable configuration, condensing and raining out moisture as it does so. The paper demonstrates the application of the algorithm on a variety of test cases including the problem of a lifted column of air.
