Gianne Derks is in Edinburgh this week visiting the School of Mathematics at Heriot-Watt University for the 2022 London Mathematical Society Undergraduate Summer School (link here). She is one of the principal lecturers and is giving three 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial on the morning of Monday-Tuesday 22-23 August. The title of Gianne‘s mini-course is “Stationary fronts in a inhomogeneous wave equation“. The mini-course looks at a semi-linear wave equation with an inhomogeneous potential in one spatial dimension. The inhomogeneity is step function-like to represent abrupt changes in media. Existence and stability of stationary fronts in such equations is studied, using a variety of methods including Sturm-Liouville theory. The picture below shows Gianne lecturing.
