The paper “Cell-strain-energy costs of active control of contractility”, co-authored by Josephine Solowiej-Wedderburn (former Surrey PhD student and now a postdoc at icelab in Umea Sweden) and Carina Dunlop, has been published as a Letter in Physical Review E. The paper shows that there is a complex relationship between the work done by the cell and activity of its contractility network. In particular, up-regulating contractility need not be mechanically expensive in stiffer environments and where adhesion patterning is adjusted appropriately.
