On Thursday 16 July, a team of PGRs and ECRs from Mathematics (Owen Pennington, Stanislaw Biber, Jessica Furber and Laura Jones) and the Vet School (Emma Carter, Mahbod Entezami, and Wenzhao Zhang) visited and received a guided tour of the Ion Beam Centre at the University of Surrey. The visit was organised by Laura Jones. Their guide for the tour was Dr Pierre Couture. He showed them the particle accelerators and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities and techniques used to investigate the structure and composition of materials with remarkable precision. Dr Couture’s research uses high-energy ion beams to reveal what materials are made of, how they are damaged or modified, and how they can be engineered for applications ranging from electronics to emerging quantum technologies.
