Clearing: One phone call and a new beginning

Why I’m glad I came to Surrey through Clearing

1. The Clearing process was straightforward and much less stressful than I expected

Going through Clearing can be a stressful experience, especially when you’re making important decisions in a short space of time. For me, one of the biggest positives about Surrey was how simple and straightforward the process was.

Compared to some other universities, I didn’t have to complete long or complicated application forms. Instead, I was able to apply with a phone call, which made the whole process feel much less overwhelming during an already stressful time.

2. Surrey offered a strong Mechanical Engineering course when my options were limited

Mechanical Engineering can be quite competitive, so there are not always many places available through Clearing. One of the reasons I’m glad I chose Surrey is that I didn’t have to compromise on the course I wanted to study.

Even though I came through Clearing, I was still able to secure a place on a highly regarded Mechanical Engineering course with excellent facilities and opportunities.

Looking back, I’m glad that Clearing gave me the opportunity to find a university and course that matched my interests and career goals, rather than having to settle for a different degree entirely or choose something that wasn’t the right fit for me.

3. I quickly realised Surrey was the right choice academically

Once I started at Surrey, I was impressed by how practical and hands-on the Mechanical Engineering course was. In our first semester, we worked with technicians to manufacture and test components I had access to workshops containing industry-standard equipment such as lathes and milling machines helping us understand engineering concepts through practical experience from the very beginning.

From speaking to friends at other universities, some of these opportunities are introduced much later in the degree, whereas at Surrey we were applying what we learned almost immediately, which helped us establish a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of engineering from the start.

My top tips

1. Keep an open mind

Before Results Day, Surrey honestly wasn’t a university I had seriously considered. At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to attend a university that hadn’t been one of my original choices.

However, going through Clearing introduced me to an opportunity that turned out to be a great fit for me. You never know which university might end up being the right place for you.

If I had ruled Surrey out simply because it wasn’t one of my original choices, I would have missed out on an opportunity that has been a great fit for me.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Shortly after applying, I received a call from Surrey where I was given an overview of the course and had the opportunity to ask any questions I had.

I would encourage anyone going through Clearing to make the most of these conversations. Ask about anything else that’s important to you. No question is too small. The more information you have, the more confident you’ll feel in your decision, which can help reduce some of the stress that often comes with Clearing.

3. Take time to research your options

Although Clearing can feel very time pressured, it’s important not to rush into a decision just because other people around you seem to have already made theirs.

Even if it takes a few days after Results Day, give yourself time to research your options, compare courses, and speak to university staff. Choosing the right university is an important decision, and it’s worth taking the time to make sure you’re selecting the option that’s best for you.
