Clearing: Surrey supported me when I needed it most

If two years ago someone had told me that I’d get into university through clearing, I would’ve said that’s not possible. Clearing is often labelled as a ‘contingency plan’ or a way of settling for less but I can assure you it’s very far from that. Looking back on it now I can confidently say that going through clearing and coming to Surrey was indeed one of the best decisions I could’ve made.

Results Day and Reconsidering My Options

I still remember results day. Unfortunately, I hadn’t achieved the grades I’d hoped for, and I had suddenly found myself overwhelmed with worry. Although clearing had been mentioned, I never really took the time to explore it as I assumed I wouldn’t need it. I’d already applied to Surrey through UCAS, but when I discovered my course was available with a foundation year, I started to consider it as an option.

Initially, I was worried that taking a foundation year would set me behind my peers. However, I’ve since learnt that university isn’t a race; everyone is working at their own pace, and there isn’t a single pathway to success.

Making the Call to Surrey

Feeling nervous, I called Surrey, my voice trembling, but the calm, reassuring voice on the other end put me at ease. I’d contacted several universities beforehand, and many of those conversations felt solely focused on my eligibility. My experience with Surrey was different. I felt supported throughout the whole conversation, and the call wasn’t as intimidating as I’d imagined. When I received an offer, I felt a sense of relief and excitement for what was to come.

Finding My Place at University

When I first arrived at Surrey, I was slightly embarrassed about having come through clearing. However, that feeling quickly disappeared when I met others who’d gone through the same experience, some of whom are now close friends of mine. Having the support of both the university and a community of people who understood what I had gone through gave me so much more confidence.

Building Confidence Through New Opportunities

And that growing confidence is one of the biggest reasons I’m glad I came to Surrey. I would’ve never imagined myself getting so involved in university life the way I have. Through joining the African Caribbean Society (ACS), I became part of a supportive community where we work together to plan events and build a sense of community for students.

I also became a student ambassador, which led to one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had at Surrey. Last year, I had the opportunity to help support prospective students during clearing. Having once been a nervous caller, it felt very meaningful to be able to help reassure and support them whilst they navigated the entire process.

Support When I Needed It Most

The support available at Surrey has also had a significant impact on my university experience. During a tough time, I accessed support through ThriveWell before later receiving more support from the Wellbeing Centre. Knowing these services are available and easily accessible gives me reassurance during challenging periods. It always reminds me that I don’t have to face difficulties alone.

Getting Involved in the Surrey Community

There are also many opportunities to get involved in the Surrey community. One activity I particularly enjoyed was the weekly gardening sessions, which allowed me to meet new people and take a break from studying. And, of course, an honourable mention to the lake during the summer. Spending time there with friends are some of my favourite memories.

My Advice for Anyone Going Through Clearing

So, if you’re planning to go through clearing or, like me, unexpectedly find yourself in that position, take my advice and don’t be too hard on yourself. Know that your journey doesn’t have to be the same as anyone else’s. Clearing isn’t a sign that you have failed or fallen behind. Sometimes it’s a redirection that takes you on a path you may not have considered before.

Why I’m Glad I Chose Surrey

When I think back on why I’m glad I came to Surrey, it’s not just because I was able to find a place on my course. It’s because I found opportunities, friendships, the confidence to do more, and a community where I can grow.

Almost two years have now passed since my A-level results day, and I can truthfully say that I’m grateful for where I ended up, and I look forward to making more memories here at Surrey.
