Starting the Employability Award back in January, I had no idea it would become such an important part of my life. As an Employability Award Assistant, I take care of the administration, marketing and development of the Award (and I absolutely love my role!). I went from completing the Award to managing and promoting it within a matter of months… but those months were marked by challenge after challenge.

During the final year of my master’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Surrey, I found myself questioning whether the world of research was for me. I had just finished a placement year at a research-based laboratory, and as much as I enjoyed it, I found myself questioning whether it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have always been a sociable person and always loved explaining and discussing my subject. It is this that sparked my interest in teaching. I had always had it in the back of my mind, but I had never had the opportunity to explore it as an option.

How I secured my placement by Kalina, Computer Science

It all started back, at the beginning of my second year when I set a goal to find the perfect placement opportunity that would prepare me
for the professional world. It would be my first job experience ever, and that thought was quite terrifying.

What happens if I don’t get invited to an interview? What if
I make a fool of myself while I’m being interviewed? What if I get the desired job but I don’t enjoy it? I felt scared and excited about this new chapter of my life. What kept me moving forward towards my goal was the desire to develop myself both professionally and as a person.


Graduate Schemes – 6 questions answered

Graduate schemes are paid structured training programmes offered by many large employers, usually lasting between
one and two years. It’s the defined time frame and structure that distinguishes a graduate scheme or programme from the wider class of ‘graduate job’, which is the general term for entry-level roles that require people with a degree qualification.
