We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrollment for the PhD degree at the University of Surrey.
The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of £15,000 per year and UK/EU tuition fees. This studentship is funded by the European Commission. This scholarship can be awarded to an overseas-fee paying student if the fee difference between the EU and overseas fee is funded by other sources.
Deformation of a metallic hollow sphere foam under local load.This project focuses on applications of metallic foams where structural functionality is combined with energy absorption, damping, heat insulation, and noise silencing.
Steel foam sandwich panels have the potential to replace conventional thin-walled steel members, where multiple functions need to be consolidated. Examples of infrastructure applications include: modular bridge decks enabling increased traffic capacity combined with vibration and noise attenuation (for densely populated urban areas); silos (local buckling alleviation); elevator shafts taking advantage of modular construction, noise and vibration attenuation, as well as off-shore structures, such as topside living quarters on oil platforms for resilient (blast and impact resistant) and comfortable (silent and vibration free) accommodation of workers; and wind turbine towers (double skins sandwich for increased stiffness combined with vibration attenuation) and wind turbine blades (light-weight, buckling mitigation, damping and silencing).
We collaborate with the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, Transportation Research Laboratory and the Highway Agency in the UK, as well as academic partners at the University of Massachusetts and the Johns Hopkins University in the United States. Therefore, short visits in Germany and the United States may be included to facilitate academic and industrial training.
